First of all, before you can become a good leader, it is important to understand who a leader is. A leader is the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. Simply put, a leader is the person in charge. To be a good leader, I suggest the following:
Lead by Example
Leading by example is simply to live by your words or in order words, doing what you say. Walking your talk establishes trust and makes people to follow you more.
Always be ready to take the first bullet. Show courage, commitment and be ready to take calculated risks. This will inspire your followers.
Know your responsibilities
The price of greatness is responsibility. The first thing to know about responsibility is self-discipline. This doesn’t mean that you have to act like a military personnel but it is important that you know how and when to work. Set a target, avoid all distractions until you have attained a satisfying result.
Always consider your followers
Always think before you act as actions have implications. The decisions you make will not only affect you but also others around you or your followers as a leader. A leader should not be selfish but should be considerate to how decisions or actions affect followers
Listen to the people you lead
Two heads are better than one. Instead of always coming up with every solution and barking out oders, take time to give the people you lead the opportunity to make contributions. Sometimes, your followers may even bring up a better solution than you could.
Consider the needs of your followers
For your followers to stay loyal to you, you will have to earn their trust. People tend to trust those who show care and compassion to their needs.
Be open to critism and make amends
Give room for your followers to speak honestly and try not to be defensive. This will create an environment where you will be able to fully understand the areas you need to improve and make amends.
Everyone you associate with have their personal battles that you know nothing about. After all we are human, so give people the benefit of the doubt as everyone is bound to make mistakes. Voltaire said: “What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other’s folly – that is the first law of nature.”
Respect is a two-way streak. To get, you have to give. Most good relationships are based on mutual trust and respect.
Settle all disagreements quickly
Set personal feelings aside, settle all dispute and move on. Keeping grudges create an unstable community. It will also affect your performance as a leader by creating distractions from the tasks that truly matter.
Be a servant
To be a good leader, you will have to be a good follower. Leadership is not just about telling people what to do or how to do it but also, it is about what you can do for them.
